Shaggy: “There’s no one king for a genre”

A viral radio interview puts a spotlight on Caribbean music’s growing place on prime-time US radio.

Speaking with DJ Mr Famous on Roadblock Radio’s Island Mix, Shaggy named Beenie Man, Kartel and Shabba as kings — and himself too — in a clip that spread quickly online.

The bigger story is the show itself: five hours every Sunday night of reggae, dancehall, soca and more on Miami’s Power 96. Shaggy recalled starting out when no station played the music and he had to work “10 times harder with 10 times less budget.”
